Lutheran Social Service of Utah has worked with recent arrivals of people fleeing Bosnia, Sudan, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
+Refugee & First Generation Literacy Program. Monday through Thursday 'Mind, Body, Spirit' English Learning and Creative Economics courses.
+1:1 English language tutoring and conversation available;
+Housing, Employment and Resume assistance.
+Vouchers available: food, clothing, shoes, home furnishings, hair cut.  1x bus pass available.

Early Childhood Programs (K-8)

Judicious Discipline, a democratic parenting model, is taught on-site to families in agencies, public workshops, and forums. In addition, LSSU sponsors the development of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Association of Childhood Development International (ACEI); which is dedicated to the international development of early childhood education.

+Science, Art and Language After School bi-lingual Program --- M-F --- Urban context, English as a Second English Language program -- co-hosted by Edison Elementary School, LSS of Utah. After-school program brings neighborhood kids together for science education, homework completion, whole language English education, tutoring, plus builds friendships. Meal served M-F.

International Adoptions

LSSU offers an international adoption program. The State of Utah licensed program is administered by officially licensed social workers.  The dream of a family is subsidized through donors as every $1 of the family is subsidized by $3 in public monies.

In-Home Elder Care

LSSU serves the community through its quality in-home care program.  We mail a free in-home care packet to aging seniors, their caregivers, families, and friends.  This packet includes a free CNA listing for affordable in-home care in all its aspects.

Lutheran Disaster Relief

Designated a Lutheran Disaster Response site in 2003, LSS of Utah is providing assistance in the event of domestic natural disaster. LSS of Utah is now a member of UVOAD -- Utah Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

  • 2004- American Red Cross -- Salt Lake Valley chapter and LSS of Utah begin on-going training support to the disaster response chaplaincy network originally established during the 2002 Olympics. Sacred Symbols, an international presentation from Canada, highlighted the importance of respecting all faith groups in chaplaincy and community-wide presentations.
  • 2005 - LSS of Utah is catalyst for first Utah community-wide web-site for Utah VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster).
  • 2007 - LSS of Utah sponsored organizational support for Bethlehem Lutheran Church (New Mexico) to build with Bethlehem Lutheran Church (African American congregation) in the New Orleans Ninth District.  Email: lssutah@yahoo.com for more 2008 build information.
  • 2009, serving on the National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) on-site planning committee for Salt Lake City Spring conference.
  • 2009, LDR Workshop, 9am-3pm both days, All Saints Episcopal Church. 
    Community-wide and Inter-Faith workshop. Disaster Response Data Base Management & Mass Casualties education event.   LDR/LSS of North Dakota, Joan Buchhop, keynote.

    General Information & Referrals

    'You are a place that listens and responds' is a comment we receive from many people calling into Lutheran Social Service of Utah. LSS of Utah priority = respond to each call with up to three significant referrals for assistance.
    In collaboration with the LDS Humanitarian Services (2003-), Salt Lake County (2005-) and the downtown Deseret Industries, LSS of Utah provides voucher assistance to low-income and refugee individuals. On-going 1:1 sessions to develop employment histories/resumes.
